Traffic Unit
In 1997, Sheriff Rodenberg and his staff created the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office first full-time Traffic Safety Unit. Because of the increased emphasis on traffic safety, the Sheriff’s Office has been able to obtain speed and Driving Under the Influence (DUI) grants totaling several thousand dollars. Also, DUI fines assessed by the Clermont County courts have been used to purchase radar and laser equipment. The Traffic Safety Unit provides enhanced enforcement in areas with high accident rates, and the Sheriff has made DUI enforcement a high priority. In 2007, Deputies cited 148 individuals for DUI offenses, and completed 447 traffic accident reports. The Traffic Safety Unit has also worked in cooperation with the Clermont County Engineer to enforce truck weight limits on Clermont County roads and bridges. This effort has served to reduce the incidence and costs of road and bridge repairs as well as maintain their suitability and safety for vehicular traffic. In 2007, 277 citations were issued for truck weight limit violations. To reinforce and recognize safe driving, the Sheriff has implemented a program where individual motorists are recognized by a letter commending them for good driving habits, as observed by the Traffic Safety Unit and other Road Patrol Deputies.
