If you travel I-275 in Clermont County will any regularity, you likely have seen a large black Dodge Dually truck with Sheriff’s Office markings. This unit is operated by the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office, and is partially funded by the Clermont County Engineer’s Office.
Under section 5577 of the Ohio Revised Code, the Sheriff is required to enforce the laws regarding overweight commercial vehicles. The primary function of the truck is to patrol for commercial vehicles that are overweight; potentially causing damage to public roadways. The heavy duty truck is needed to carry the 16 individual scales that are housed in the bed of the truck, each weighing approximately 65 pounds.
Most commercial vehicle traffic uses the I-275 corridor to travel to and from job sites which is why you often see the truck in this area. Once a violation is detected, the Deputy stops the vehicle, and then escorts the suspected overweight vehicle to a safe location where he uses the portable scales to weigh the vehicle.
