An unattended motor vehicle can be a potentially dangerous place for a child. Please take a few moments to review these safety guidelines.
Reasons to never leave a child unattended in or around a motor vehicle…
- Hyperthermia (heat exhaustion and heat stroke)
- Hypothermia (A dangerous loss of body warmth)
- Accidentally placing vehicle in gear
- Power window strangulation
- Carbon Monoxide poisoning
- Increased risk of “back-over” death and injury due to higher profile vehicles
- Victim of carjacking
Some ideas for prevention…
- Never leave a child unattended. Not even for a minute. “Do you want to save a minute or save a child’s life?”
- Use a visual reminder that you have a child in the car
- Put your purse, briefcase or cell phone on the rear seat next to the child so you have to physically go into the rear passenger area.
- Keep a teddy-bear (or other item) in the child seat. When the child is placed in the seat, put the bear in the front with you as a reminder.
- Make it a practice to always check the passenger area when you get out of the car.
- Have an arrangement with your child-care provider that if the child is not dropped off that you get a call.
- Keep your car locked, even in your own garage or driveway. Not only does this prevent theft but it also keeps children from playing inside a vehicle.
- NEVER allow children to play in a vehicle. It’s not a playhouse, a castle or a fort. A car is not a babysitter but it can become an oven.
